How to Read UK Allergen Labels

A consistent label-checking routine is one of the best ways to make safer packaged-food choices.

Match the exact product

Check the brand, flavour, pack size and recipe version. Products that look nearly identical may use different ingredients, and packaging updates can appear at different times in different shops.

Find emphasised allergens

On many UK prepacked foods, deliberately used regulated allergens are emphasised within the ingredients list, often with bold type. Read the list from beginning to end instead of scanning only for one familiar word, because allergens can appear inside compound ingredients.

Read precautionary statements

Look near the ingredients for wording about possible traces or shared manufacturing. These statements communicate a different kind of risk from intentionally added ingredients but should still be considered according to the person's allergy management plan.

Check preparation directions

Instructions may mention shared equipment, additional ingredients or serving suggestions that change suitability. When eating away from home, ask clear questions and ensure staff understand which ingredient must be avoided.

Do not rely on front-of-pack design

Words such as “natural”, “plant-based” or “vegan” do not answer every allergen question. Use the full statutory information and any explicit free-from claims relevant to your needs.

Labelling rules and recipes can change. Treat the current package as your starting point and contact the manufacturer when information is unclear.
